“Artificial Intelligence, Capitalism and Humanity¨ with Mark McNeilly
AIER’s Bastiat Society program in Raleigh will host an event with Mark McNeilly, Professor of the Practice, Marketing and Organizational Behavior at Kenan-Flagler Business School, UNC.
AI is the product of capitalism powering scientific progress. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, had to become a for-profit enterprise in order to fund its ability to produce the fastest growing application in history. Billions of dollars are being invested in AI by established players like Microsoft, Google and Meta and start-ups are sprouting up everywhere funded by VCs eager to capitalize on this new technology. Opportunities to make vast sums of money abound and the power of AI has improved the productivity and creativity of people the world over.
However, where the development of AI will lead is beyond anyone´s ability to predict. The impact on jobs, on learning, on warfare are all unknown. The future could be one of infinite possibilities and leisure in which we choose to do whatever interests us at the moment, or a time where millions of people are out of work and whose lives have lost meaning. And the creators of AI tools all agree that the possibility of AI eliminating humanity is well within the realm of possibility.
In our discussion, Professor McNeilly will look at the promise and perils of AI, where there are opportunities and where there are dangers. Join us for an interesting and engaging discussion about how the future might unfold.
This event is free and open to the public, but please consider making a $25 donation to help sustain the chapter.
