Join the Institute for Humane Studies for a two-day, in-person graduate papers workshop on “Liberalism and Social Change,” hosted in partnership with Dr. Fabio Rojas (Indiana University) and Dr. Mikayla Novak (Mercatus Center at George Mason University). Held on the George Mason University Arlington campus on November 6–7, this workshop offers PhD students and postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to present paper drafts and receive detailed, constructive feedback from peers and faculty discussants.
We welcome research examining the relationship between liberal thought and social change. This includes work on how liberal institutions shape and are reshaped by political, economic, and cultural transformation; the organizational dynamics of civil society and collective action; historical and contemporary processes of emancipation, rights expansion, and social inclusion; the political economy of reform and institutional change; and the ways liberal theory intersects with sociological accounts of how societies evolve over time.
Participants will deepen their research, engage in substantive discussions, and connect with a community of scholars investigating how liberal ideas and social movements interact to shape political and social change. IHS will provide all participants with a $200 honorarium and a stipend to offset transportation and travel-related meal expenses. Two nights of lodging and all meals during the workshop itself will be provided by IHS.
